Norlanding (/ˈnɔrləndɪŋ/ [Translation Unavailable]) is a subtropical Large Town located in the Seóvmbaw̄ä Provence of the Kingdom of Hobben.

The name Norlanding is derived from the Sylvin language, as Norlanding was founded by Ha̋shīkī Ma̋mbónḱ 'Dani Zeni' Mä̂ Ma̋chvé̄ Mboú̄ Dowdeswell, who was culturaly Sylvin.

Climate

Norlanding has a yearly average temperature of 21°C (69°F), with its average temperature during the summer being a warm 30°C (86°F) and its average temperature during the winter being a cool 13°C (55°F). Norlanding receives an average of 271 cm/y (106 in/y) of precipitation, most of which comes in the form of rain during the summer. Norlanding covers an area of nearly 6 km2 (2 mi2), and an average elevation of 1008 m (3307 ft) above sea level.

Overview

Norlanding was founded durring the late 10th century, by Ha̋shīkī Ma̋mbónḱ 'Dani Zeni' Mä̂ Ma̋chvé̄ Mboú̄ Dowdeswell. The establishment of Norlanding was somewhat plagued by a lack of willing colonists, leading to Ha̋shīkī Ma̋mbónḱ 'Dani Zeni' Mä̂ Ma̋chvé̄ Mboú̄ Dowdeswell electing to pay people to resettle in Norlanding.

Norlanding was built using the conventions of Sylvin durring the late 10th century. Naturaly, all settlmentss have their own look to them, and Norlanding is no diffrent. The town's buildings feature waddle and daub construction with good timber frames and a stone foundation protected by thatched or shingled rooves. Most buildings with second floors are built in such a way as to overhang into the streets on the upper floors for more space, as building size seems to be the primary indicator of wealth within the community. Most buildings are not decorated with any integral features, but instead use ivy, flowers, and other natural elements in planters of on trellices to breathe life into the structure they grow upon.

Norlanding is buildings are arranged arrounded highly ordered system of spacious baked earthen streets which form octogonal paterns, allowing the incides of the octagons to be common grounds for the buildings on the edges, be it for parkland, yardspace, plazas, or markets. The town has a fortified albit thin brick wall. The wall has most of the feeatures of a typical castle wall, just on a much smaller scale and and budget. Notably brick isn't a particuarly soild choice for resisting siege weapons. Norlanding's wall wouldn't hinder a proper army, but it is more than sufishent for bandits and other small marauding groups. Astonishigly, the monster and outlaw focused fortifications are in pristine condishion, as if they had just been finished before you laied eyes upon them.

A look around Norlanding makes it abundantly clear the town suffered something horrible some time ago. It’s a quiet town filled with closed scriptoriums, people quietly yet dejectedly reading in isolated places around town, and the occasional book laying in a heap of garbage.

Civic Infrastructure

Norlanding has an Office of Civil Groundskeeping, which works to enforce local ordinances relating to the construction and upkeep up of all plant life, water features, and other natural decorations within Norlanding. They are also responsible for the maintenance of these features. Notably, the OCG is not responsible for Norlanding's parks.

Norlanding has an Office of Civil Vicary, which is responsible for providing a livelyhood for all officialy recognised religious figures within Norlanding.

Norlanding has a Gravedigger's Guild, which is responsible for collecting the dead and laying them to rest according to all applicable laws and religious customs.

Norlanding has a Highwayman's Guild, which is tasked with maintaining the roads and highways leading into town as well as keeping them safe for travelers.

Norlanding has a Parks and Recreation Department, which is responsible for the construction, management, and usage rights for all of its parks and parklands. They are not to be confused with the Office of Civil Groundskeeping as they do not hold authority over nor responsibility for Norlanding's natural decorations nor waterways.

Norlanding has a public schooling program overseen by the Hall of Sages who has the responsibility of ensuring access to affordable high-quality education in all basic classes (Reading, Writing, Mathmatics, General Sciences, General Arcana, and Social Education) is made available to all citizens.

Norlanding has a public septic system, which allows its citizens to have indoor bathrooms. The septic system is overseen by the League of Sewerkeepers, who posses the legal authority to enforce all laws relating to the septic system, and are also tasked with its maintenance and upkeep.

Cultural Notes

Religious leaders are influential in almost any community, but in Norlanding they make up the final authorities. It may be an explicit theocracy, with rule by the clerics of a particular faith, or a temple might be so important and powerful that the official leaders are helpless to resist its will. The locals can be expected to be loyal adherents to the faith, or else the less pious majority is deeply intimidated by the religion’s believers.

Norlanding's town hall was built using a different architectural style from the rest of the town. The style used is admittedly strange and non-linear style rooted in defiance of symmetrical shapes. It championed the creation of buildings with a unique visual appearance. the structural norms of classic buildings and deforms or moves away from elementary architectural principles. By including non-linear designs processed into its buildings and favoring fragmentation, this style expressed a form of controlled chaos. Its buildings appear out-of-the-ordinary, draw the eye in immediately and sometimes create a feeling of strangeness. These distorted shapes and structure are not reserved to the building’s outer facade, they destabilize interior elements too, favoring minimalism and play on people’s perceptions by injecting a futuristic touch.
